Diabetes Risk Factors

MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS are associated with higher risk for diabetes. Among the most important include:

1. Overweight and obesity

Average risk: Waist size: 80 – 88 cm for women, and 94 – 102 cm for men.

High risk: Waist size: more than 88 cm for women and more than 102 cm for men.

2. Low level of physical activities

3. Unhealthy food

4. High blood sugar levels (hyperglycaemia): over 30% of people with high blood sugar levels develop diabetes in the next 5 years, meaning that they are 10 times more in risk compared to people with normal blood sugar levels.

UNMODIFIABLE FACTORS
Among the most important include:

1) Age: the risk increases with age; the recommended time limit for risk assessment is at age 40.

2) Family diabetes history is an important genetic factor which increases the risk of developing diabetes.

3) Ethnicity: people from South East Asia, Japan and China are more likely to developing diabetes.

4) Women with diabetes during pregnancy or who have delivered over 4kg infant, are more likely to developing diabetes.

ENVIRONMENTAL RISK FACTORS

Environmental conditions should contribute to improving your health. However, environmental risk factors include:

An environment that prevents participation in physical activities e.g. lack of bicycle paths, playgrounds, sports facilities.

An environment that favours unhealthy diet e.g. lack of self-service canteen at the workplace and school with healthy and affordable choices of food and beverages

An environment that favours stress and concern e.g. unemployment, problems with partners, multiple morbidity, social isolation of the elderly
